YouTube introduces live video previews similar to TikTok in Shorts feed
YouTube has introduced a fresh feature that incorporates live videos into the Shorts feed. While scrolling through YouTube Shorts, users now have the chance to come across previews of live broadcasts in progress. They can effortlessly join the stream by simply tapping on the “Watch Live” button. This feature is reminiscent of TikTok’s experience, where users can easily navigate through a feed of live content that is optimized for mobile devices.
Improved discoverability for live broadcasts
Including live video previews in the Shorts feed expands user discovery and provides easy access to live broadcasts while consuming short content. While creators have long had the ability to stream in a vertical format, this enhancement aims to improve discoverability by displaying live broadcasts directly in the Shorts feed.
This approach mirrors a strategy adopted by TikTok, which has proven successful in increasing engagement with live streaming. TikTok has made significant efforts to prioritize streaming, drawing inspiration from its success in the Chinese market. While Western audiences have shown mixed interest in live streaming, integrating live broadcasts seamlessly into the content feed offers a non-disruptive way to encourage content creators to experiment with the feature.
YouTube expands podcasting capabilities
In addition to this development, YouTube has announced another update that will allow podcasts to upload their RSS feed directly through YouTube Studio. By connecting their podcast feed to the platform, content producers can create static images for each episode, expand the distribution channels of their content, and provide additional opportunities for audiences to access their podcasts.
The move underscores YouTube’s commitment to improving podcasting capabilities, capitalizing on the platform’s growing popularity as a destination for listening to audio, particularly through YouTube Music. Building on previous improvements such as the ability to create podcast playlists and access podcast analytics, this update further strengthens YouTube’s position as a viable platform for podcast distribution.
For YouTube video content creators who are already established on YouTube, leveraging the platform’s podcasting capabilities offers an opportunity to expand their audience reach and connect with new listeners through the YouTube app. This integration underscores YouTube’s dedication to providing content creators with versatile tools to diversify their content offerings and reach audiences across formats.
